The constraint is the format

Conventional prebiotic fibres work. They also work at 5,000 to 15,000 mg a day. At that intake the ingredient stops being an addition to the format and becomes the format.

Three things break at gram scale:

  • Space. A capsule cannot hold five grams of anything. Neither can a gummy, a shot, or a compact stick-pack.
  • Sensory load. Grams of soluble fibre bring viscosity, mouthfeel, and sweetness that a beverage or bar has to be reformulated around.
  • Tolerance. Gram-scale fermentable fibre is the standard cause of the bloating and gas that drives consumers off a product in week two.

The result is that the categories with the best-substantiated gut biology are locked out of the formats consumers actually buy. Efficacy and formulability have been a trade-off. That trade-off is what the low-dose category exists to remove.

Why some things need grams and others do not

This is the distinction that decides everything else on the page, and it is simpler than the category names suggest.

Substrates have to be eaten. A prebiotic fibre works by being fermented. The bacteria consume it, so the amount you deliver sets the size of the effect. Mass is the mechanism. You cannot shrink the dose without shrinking the outcome, which is why a fibre that works at grams cannot be reformulated into a capsule.

Modulators do not. A molecule that changes what the resident community does, without being eaten by it, is not consumed in proportion to its effect. It signals, and it modulates: shifting which species are active and what they produce. Milligram intakes are enough because the active is never the fuel.

That is the whole reason a low-dose active can be credible. When you see a gut ingredient claiming effect at milligrams, the first question is which of those two things it is. If it is a substrate being sold at a modulator's dose, ask what the dose was in the study.

How to judge a low-dose claim

Five questions worth asking any supplier, including us.

1. What was the dose in the study, and is it the dose on the label? The gap between a research dose and a commercial dose is the most common soft spot in this category, and it is rarely disclosed on a product page. 2. Substrate or modulator? If the mechanism is fermentation, a low dose needs an explanation. 3. What is the measured endpoint? A shift in a named organism, a metabolite, or a clinical outcome are three very different claims. 4. Is it stable without a cold chain? Viability handling changes your supply chain, your shelf life, and your packaging. 5. What can I claim on pack today, and what is gated on evidence that does not exist yet? A supplier who cannot separate those two is telling you something.
